This is an interesting one.

As a musician one struggles to be heard and gain an audience who’ll hang on to your every note and utterance. So - what we have here is music which is designed to be ignored. It’s meant to be played so quietly that it’s only just audible.

The purpose is to slow down the brain waves which causes better concentration and an improved ability to focus for long periods of time. It also helps you retain information better.

It’s been shown to be a great de-stresser after a hard day at work and it also helps you focus whilst jogging etc.

Teachers TV did a great piece on it based on work in schools. It works just as well with adults. You can see it here.
